A month in, the launch of the Professional Women's Hockey League has been by all accounts a resounding win, from multiple attendance records being broken to the quality of play. Women's players have been involved in NHL All-Star Weekend several times now, including longtime U.S. captain Kendall Coyne Schofield stealing the show in the fastest skater event in the 2019 skills competition. Minnesota on Jan. 6 set the record for the biggest crowd to attend a professional women's hockey game with 13,316 at the Wild's home arena in St. Paul. “We’ll continue to lean in and work with the women’s players and have them as part of our world,” Mayer said. “It just makes it a better event.”The only thing that would be better, Coyne Schofield said, is having every PWHL player taking part.

The NHL isn't the only one who uses the All-Star Game as a lab to test different things that could find its way into the game in the future. This weekend's events in Toronto are also a chance for ESPN and Sportsnet to experiment with coverage ideas that could be implemented down the line during the regular season and Stanley Cup playoffs. The biggest change the league and ESPN implemented is the retooled skills competition on Friday night. The skills competition will be broadcast on ESPN, and Saturday afternoon's All-Star Game will be on ABC. The network and NHL are hoping ratings for the All-Star Game continue to rebound.

CNN —A historic ruling by the United Nations’ top court in a genocide case against Israel on Friday was welcomed by the three main parties it involved: Israel, South Africa and the Palestinians. The International Court of Justice in The Hague, the Netherlands, ordered Israel to “take all measures” to prevent genocide in Gaza after South Africa accused Israel of violating international laws on genocide in its war in the territory. It rejected Israel’s request for the case to be thrown out, but it also stopped short of ordering Israel to halt the war as South Africa has asked. “I would have wanted a ceasefire,” said South African foreign minister Naledi Pandor after the ruling in The Hague. Mohammed el-Kurd, a Palestinian activist from Jerusalem, said the ICJ failed on South Africa’s “most important request” to suspend the military operations.

For four years now, the housing market has defied all logic. Even so, home prices stubbornly kept rising, creating the most unaffordable housing market in generations. So while buying a home continues to be an infuriating experience, marked by high prices, high interest rates and low inventory, renting an apartment is getting easier. That means that unless you plan to live in a house for the next decade or so, now may not be the best time to buy it. “This is about the worst time to buy a home,” said Christopher Mayer, a real estate professor at Columbia Business School.

Read previewIf you're hoping to age gracefully, getting enough protein may be a good place to start, new research suggests. The study followed women who were in good health and between their 30s to 50s at the start of the study. AdvertisementThey found that women who ate more protein had notably lower rates of chronic diseases linked to aging, including heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and cognitive decline. Future studies could also help explore who could benefit since the demographics in this study were limited to women of a specific age group and profession. The results also suggest it's a good idea to start eating enough protein in your younger years before health issues arise.

How Jewish People Built the American Theater
  + stars: | 2023-11-29 | by ( Jesse Green | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +46 min
Let Us Tell You A Story How Jewish people built the American theater as we know it. The theater, which for many Jews was a major way of becoming American in the first place, seems unable to acknowledge that the danger that American Jews face is not just historical, and not just onstage. (Both of Adler’s parents were Yiddish theater stars — her father, Jacob Adler, was a renowned Shylock in 1903.) Embedding their own observation and experience within Stanislavsky’s, along with the best of Yiddish theater and a generous dollop of Freud, they converted the American theater to Judaism. Sara Krulwich/The New York TimesThe Jewish contribution to the creation of the American theater was built on the acknowledgment of a larger humanity alive within each of us, available to some, with natural empathy and rigorous training.

OpenAI's board of directors fired Sam Altman, the man behind ChatGPT, in a shock move on Friday. OpenAI's board announced Friday that Altman is out saying it "no longer has confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI." The board consisted of six people including OpenAI's president and cofounder Greg Brockman, OpenAI's chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, Adam D'Angelo, Tasha McCauley, Helen Toner and Sam Altman himself. He pointed out that even CEOs are "at-will employees," at US companies, but that OpenAI's board "behaved like a bunch of kids" and "erratically" in this instance. Most of OpenAI's board members don't own shares in the company, including Sam Altman himself who chose not to take any equity in, which ultimately limited his power and influence.

By Rich McKay(Reuters) - A Jewish school in Montreal was hit by gunfire early on Sunday, making it the third time in less than a week that a Jewish school in the Canadian city was hit amid heightened tensions over the conflict between Israel and Gaza, police said, according to local media. Bullet impact marks and bullet shells were found after residents heard gunfire early on Sunday, CBC News in Canada reported. At the two other schools in Montreal, both reported finding a bullet hole in their front doors Thursday morning, local media reported. It was unclear if the incidents at Jewish schools in the city's west end were related. The ensuing Israeli bombardment of the Hamas-run Gaza Strip has killed more than 10,000 people, Palestinian health authorities say.
